Any Virginia ZIP code. Distances are measured from the ZIP code's center.
What this shows
Every site DEQ flags as a data center in its daily Air Sites records. Data centers need a DEQ air permit for their backup diesel generators, so this covers projects from the point they apply for one. The stage (planned, under construction, operating) is DEQ's own.
Air permit dates come from DEQ's issued-permits list, saved . Sites DEQ has on record but hasn't issued a permit for yet show no date.
Diamonds are county filings that mention a data center: land-use applications (rezonings, special exceptions), which the county board decides, usually after a public hearing, and site plans, which county staff review. They come before any DEQ air permit. Loudoun County's come from its land application records (LOLA); the status is the county's own, and each links to its county record.
What it doesn't show yet
- Other counties' filings. County filings are shown for Loudoun County so far; elsewhere, a proposal appears only once it applies for a DEQ air permit. Fairfax and Prince William are next.
- Cost and size. These come from county building permits, also next.
- Meetings and how to take part. Upcoming hearings, comment periods and who decides, by ZIP code, are planned.
